Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in the United States, excluding skin cancers.1 According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 104,270 new cases of colon cancer and 45,230 new cases of rectal cancer will be diagnosed in the United States in 2021.1 Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in American men and women combined.1 Although overall mortality rates for the disease have been on the decline for several decades, deaths among individuals aged <55 years have been on the rise.1,2 How much do you know about colorectal cancer?

Colorectal cancers typically begin as polyps that develop on the inner lining of the colon or rectum.1,2 Routine screenings allow clinicians to locate and remove these polyps before they turn into cancer.2 Screenings are also helpful for diagnosing colorectal cancers at earlier stages, which can improve prognosis.2 The 5-year survival rate is 90% for individuals diagnosed with localized-stage disease but declines to 71% and 14% for those diagnosed with regional and distant stages, respectively.2 Public awareness of colorectal cancer and the importance of early detection needs to remain a priority to increase survival rates and improve patient quality of life.
