Bladder cancer is the sixth most common cancer diagnosed in the United States.1 It is the fourth most common cancer in men and the twelfth most common cancer in women.1 According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 83,730 new cases of bladder cancer (64,280 men and 19,450 women) will be diagnosed in the United States in 2021, and approximately 17,200 individuals (12,260 men and 4940 women) will die from the disease.2 Smoking accounts for 47% of all these cases.3 How much do you know about bladder cancer?
The most common type of bladder cancer is urothelial carcinoma, which begins in the urothelial cells that line the inner part of the bladder.1,2 The disease is most often diagnosed in individuals aged >55 years and in Whites, and approximately half of all cases are in situ at the time of diagnosis.2 The 5-year relative survival rate for all stages of bladder cancer combined is 77%, with rates of 96%, 69%, 37%, and 6% for in situ, localized, regional, and distant disease, respectively.2 Public awareness of bladder cancer needs to remain a priority to increase survival rates and improve patient quality of life.
