According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 288,300 men in the United States will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2023, and approximately 34,700 deaths will be attributed to the disease.1 September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, a time set aside to help people learn more about the disease and to support those who are affected. How much do you know about prostate cancer?

Aside from nonmelanoma skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men in the United States.1 It is also the second leading cause of cancer-related death in American men, behind only lung cancer.1 The incidence of prostate cancer diagnoses declined sharply from 2007 to 2014 because screening guidelines at the time resulted in less prostate-specific antigen testing. Since 2014, however, the overall incidence rate has increased by 3% annually and by approximately 5% annually for advanced-stage disease.1 Public awareness of prostate cancer needs to remain a priority to improve survival and quality of life.
