Beyond Summer: Sun Safety a Crucial Year-Round Effort for Oncology Nurses

As the warm embrace of summer continues to hold strong, oncology nurses recognize the unique challenges our patients face during this season. From managing side effects of treatment amid overbearing heatwaves to promoting skin safety and protection against too much sun exposure. Our role in providing guidance for best practice during and after cancer treatment is of vital importance to keep our patients safe.

However, sun safety and the risk of skin cancer are not just topics reserved for the summer months. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UV rays are a risk to be mindful of all year. Even on days that are cloudy and cool, UV rays can reach people by reflecting off surfaces like water, cement, sand, and snow. It is advisable to wear sunscreen daily.

Experts from the MD Anderson Cancer Center suggest that cancer survivors heed sun safety recommendations, including regulating exposure to the sun, applying broad spectrum sunscreen, and wearing clothing that protects skin from sun damage and UV rays.

Echoing my call for papers in the last issue of The Oncology Nurse APN/PA (TON), I invite all oncology nurses and oncology advanced practitioners to contribute their expertise and insights on navigating everyday issues that are important to their patients.

Let’s come together to share best practices and innovative strategies you employ in your practice that may enhance the quality of care we provide to our patients all year. We welcome personal essays, best practice tips, commentaries on the best strategies to employ, and more.

As always, I hope that you enjoy this issue of TON and invite you to visit www.TheOncologyNurse.com to share your feedback directly with us.
